Step 5: Resistor and relays

Instead of fitting these parts to the firewall or inner fender I decided to follow the Toyota philosophy and mount them together in a separate box.

The 8-pin connector makes it easy to disable the system and go back to the original pre-heating set-up, should one wish to do so. Or, what I did, to run the car with the original set-up until the conversion was complete.

Step 6: New wiring

With the relay box, electric fuel heater and temperature switch in place it was time to fit the new wiring. The Elsbett kit comes with all the required gauges. The lengths supplied are generous. The colours, however, did not always match those in the Elsbett wiring diagram which made indentification of the correct gauges a bit hard at times.

Three wires were connected near the pre-heating timer, located behind the glovebox.

The +12V connection to the heater relay was made by running a new wire from the positive battery terminal. All earth connections were made through a new wire to the negative battery terminal.

The electric heater relay comes with a built-in blade fuse. No additional fuses are required.

Note: As I was still driving on diesel-only, the cut wire was temporarily reconnected at the 8-pin connector to maintain the original pre-heating set-up.

Step 7: Fuel related components

The SVO fuel filter was already mounted in its clamp. What remained to be done was fitting the new injection pump IN and OUT screws, the biofuel-resistant hoses, and the stop valve between the original fuel filter and the injection pump.

As I had never worked on an injection pump before, I decided to leave things to the local Toyota dealer.

Note: Later I found a problem with the fuel supply. More on this in the Experience section.

Step 8: Making the switch

Time to plug in the 8-pin connector and put some canola oil into the main tank.

The result was stunning in its simplicity. Apart from a slightly increased glow time and the absence of any diesel smell it was impossible to tell the car was running on a different fuel.
